Manchester United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper looks set to heat up as we race toward the summer transfer window, as Andre Onana’s future is beyond uncertain.

For Andre Onana, the past week has gone from bad to worse, with the Manchester United number one having an appalling night in Lyon.

Onana was at fault for both goals United conceded against Lyon and this was not the first time that he let down Ruben Amorim in goal which cause drastic action to be taken.

After this performance, Mike Phelan told Amorim he had to drop Onana for United, and fans were all in agreement with this decision. Sunday against Newcastle and Onana was dropped entirely from the squad with Altay Bayindir instead handed his first Premier League start.

Bayindir was not the saviour United needed in goal as he shipped four to Newcastle and failed to impress, although he didn’t make any errors which could be enough to have him ahead of Onana.

Manchester Evening News have reported that Onana is concerned that he may not return to the team for this week’s second leg against Lyon. But this summer should see United upgrade, and one option looks the most obvious.

James Trafford could be Manchester United’s ideal Andre Onana replacement

This summer, Amorim could have no choice but to see the arrival of a new starting goalkeeper, with any faith in Onana sure to have eroded at this point.

Onana is thought to have suitors in Saudi Arabia, with United expecting to receive a fee of around £20m for the Cameroonian shot stopper, which will not cover his remaining book value of roughly £26m.

Already, several names are being linked with replacing Onana, including Parma’s Zion Suzuki, who has emerged as an option for United after years of links.

However, one of the stronger candidates is Burnley’s James Trafford and who is having a sublime campaign in the Championship and might be the ideal replacement.

Trafford has been so important in their promotion charge and has turned himself into one of Europe’s very best.

At just 22 years old, Trafford had a difficult first year in the Premier League for relegation-bound Burnley. However, this season in the Championship has been a different story.

Trafford has conceded just 13 goals in 41 games despite facing 24.2 post-shot expected goals, which speaks to how impressive he has been.

This season, Trafford has averaged an impressive 85.2% save percentage, which ranks him as the best in Europe, with the best in the top five leagues being Finn Dahmen of Augsburg with 82.4%.

When comparing Trafford with Onana, the difference is clear to see as the English U21 goalkeeper excels in almost all useful metrics for scoring a goalkeeper.

Even taking into account the level difference, Trafford is still comfortably a better shot-stopper and one of Europe’s very best.

He would be a top recruit for United this summer, with Jason Wilcox likely knowing Trafford better than anyone from his role in the Manchester City academy where Trafford came through.
