Mike Phelan has insisted that Ruben Amorim must now make a major call over one Manchester United star after the 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon.
Manchester United and Lyon played out an entertaining contest at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in their first-leg Europa League quarter-final clash.
Lyon struck first in the last-eight encounter against United after Thiago Almada’s direct free-kick in the first half managed to beat a careless Andre Onana.
Thiago Almada’s opener for Lyon was cancelled out before half-time after Leny Yoro turned in a superb header from close range past Lucas Perri in first-half injury time.
United built momentum against Lyon in the second half and the Red Devils took the lead after Joshua Zirkzee climbed off the bench and scored a brilliant header.
However, Joshua Zirkzee’s effort in the 88th minute would be cancelled out by a dramatic late equaliser for Lyon deep into second-half stoppage time.
Andre Onana denied Georges Mikautadze’s powerful close-range shot, but the United No 1 pushed the ball into a dangerous area and Rayan Cherki netted for Lyon.

Mike Phelan makes his feelings clear on Andre Onana after Ruben Amorim watched Man Utd star’s disastrous performance vs Lyon
Andre Onana was slammed by Manchester United fans after the former Ajax and Inter Milan star committed his two sloppy mistakes in the Europa League clash.
Mike Phelan, who was United assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, dropped his two cents on the 29-year-old Cameroonian’s display.
The 62-year-old former United assistant manager admitted that Ruben Amorim should consider whether or not he drops the error-prone Onana going forward.
“That’s the biggest decision as a manager you have to make,” Phelan told Sky Sports.
“I know one great manager who made a huge decision in a cup final one year for Manchester United.
“It’s a decision you have to look at. Is there a number two goalkeeper at United capable of taking the role for the rest of the season?
“You can’t keep covering up those mistakes.”
Ruben Amorim spoke out on Andre Onana after Man Utd’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw vs Lyon
Speaking after Thursday’s result at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, United manager Ruben Amorim was asked if Andre Onana felt ‘down’ after his howlers against Lyon.
“No, I didn’t see him, to be honest with you,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“I used these minutes to try to calm down, to come here to say the right things. But it’s normal.
“And I think it felt really quiet, the dressing room. And that is a good thing. We draw away in Europe. That’s always hard.
“The team is suffering, but we need to change that and we have the opportunity to change. So, let’s focus on that.”
United and Lyon will meet in the return leg of the Europa League quarter-finals at Old Trafford on 17th April, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
