Manchester United’s Premier League campaign has been a write-off for a while now but that doesn’t excuse the manner of their latest defeat.
Individual, and unforced errors ruled the agenda again as Man Utd limply surrendered to Newcastle in a 1-4 defeat to compound Ruben Amorim’s problems.
Noussair Mazraoui’s worst Man Utd game saw him get put on skates repeatedly by Newcastle’s wingers, but Amorim will have a far bigger problem.
Namely, a 3/10 star who was supposed to be the answer but ended up giving the Man Utd manager his biggest headache yet.

Ruben Amorim’s biggest Man Utd headache
It’s easy to say that the league is a write-off but winning is a habit, and so is losing, and the latter is becoming the norm at Man United.
A 4-1 defeat full of confidence-draining mistakes is hardly the ideal way to walk into the biggest game of the season against driven opposition.
Amorim rolled the dice vs Newcastle with his team selection, giving Harry Amass his maiden league start and the youngster didn’t look out of place at least.
However, the problem Amorim will walk away with is due to the performance of this other selection call – installing Altay Bayindir as the goalkeeper.
Amorim dropped Andre Onana from the squad altogether and the hope was that Bayindir would build on the momentum he had prior to his injury.
What happened instead was a performance that was essentially an extension of the Cameroonian’s woes, with the fourth goal, particularly, a galling error.
Just like that, Bayindir, who was supposed to be the answer to Amorim’s goalkeeping problem, has left him with the dilemma of choosing the “less worse” option instead of the better one.
Altay Bayindir spurned golden opportunity
As a backup goalkeeper, these are the kinds of circumstances you live for when the established No. 1 wobbles to such an extent that you get the opportunity to take their place.
This game had the potential to not only get Bayindir first-choice status, but save his Man Utd career as well, with rumours swirling over a potential summer exit.
All that performance has done is make Amorim realise that he doesn’t need one, but two goalkeepers in the summer, spurning a golden opportunity.
Suddenly, a position that was lower down the pecking order of priorities in the summer window is shooting up that list with alarming urgency at the worst part of the season.
