Lammens kept a clean sheet vs Brighton but a weakness opens the door for Radek Vitek to break out

Senne Lammens got a rare clean sheet against Brighton, but Radek Vitek would see that game and think he has a chance next season.

It has been an interesting ride for Senne Lammens at Man Utd so far, because he has been world-class, while clean sheets have been hard to come by.

He concedes otherworldly goals regularly, but Man Utd fans are grateful to have a goalkeeper they can forget about, so safe is he.

However, despite the clean sheet vs Brighton, one weakness of his came to the fore, and Radek Vitek will watch it closely to overtake him next season.

Senne Lammens nervy moments

Lammens has mastered the art of doing the basics well and coming up with the odd wondersave to enhance his reputation.

There is no longer palpable fear among Man Utd fans when Lammens has the ball near him, but one fear is emerging.

The Belgian has looked nervy with the ball at his feet ever since he made the error that led to a goal against Liverpool.

Lammens recovered immensely from it to show his mentality, but it happened again on multiple occasions against Brighton.

He was missing simple passes to the left back as Brighton forced him onto his left foot and cut off the easy passing lanes.

Michael Carrick is clearly evolving his playing style and making it more expansive, which means that the goalkeeper will have to be more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Therein lies the opening for Radek Vitek to challenge Lammens next season.

Radek Vitek can challenge Lammens

Lammens will travel for the World Cup, which means Radek Vitek will get the pre-season as United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Vitek shone on loan at Bristol City this season, and his strengths as a goalkeeper are broadly similar to those of Lammens.

Both are physical monsters who have a command of their area and excel at traditional shot-stopping.

However, both have room for improvement with the ball at their feet. The road is relaxed for Lammens as the incumbent, but Vitek needs to improve quickly in this area because it can set him apart.

If he can add ball-playing skills to go with his shot-stopping excellence, then he starts to look like a more complete player than Lammens, at least eventually.
