Manchester United chiefs moved quickly to get a deal over the line for Ruben Amorim to become head coach.
Less than 24 hours after Erik ten Hag was sacked, Manchester United fans were aware that the club’s leaders were in hot pursuit of Ruben Amorim.
Only a few days after that, the deal was signed sealed and delivered with Amorim set to take charge on November 11th – exactly one week from now.
There were a few hurdles for United to jump over during negotiations, including some confusion around Amorim’s €10m release clause.
Amorim only wanted to join United despite other clubs triggering his release clause, but he did intially want to end the current season with Sporting before leaving for Manchester. United chiefs told him it was “now or never”.
The 39-year-old quickly made his mind up and signed with United, but he has now revealed a last-ditch offer from the Sporting president.

Ruben Amorim was offered contract renewal at Sporting Lisbon
Amorim has previously revealed that he had informed Sporting Lisbon president Federico Varandas that no matter what happened, he would be leaving at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
However, United put Amorim in a difficult position by approaching him midway through the season.
It didn’t take him long to decide on a move to England, but Amorim has now revealed that he received a late offer from Sporting to stay.
As quoted by Manchester Evening News, Amorim said: “In the meeting where I said I wanted to leave, Varandas said I could renew and that if I changed my mind, we could talk…”
Thankfully Amorim did not change his mind and Ineos got their man.
What to expect from Ruben Amorim at Man United
In just one week, United fans will get their first glimpse at Amorim as the new head coach, and there is plenty to be excited about ahead of his arrival.
The young Portuguese manager has been compared to Jose Mourinho ahead of his move to England, although Amorim’s “spectacular” style of play is slightly different from the ‘Special One’.
Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand has told United what to expect from Amorim, claiming his management style is “not like anything” he has seen.
Amorim has a huge job ahead of him and there will no doubt be question marks around his age and experience, but everything so far suggests he is up for the challenge – and more than capable of succeeding.
