Cristiano Ronaldo signing for Manchester City is every Manchester United fans’ worst nightmare.

Sky report City and Ronaldo are in talks over a potential deal. So any slither of hope that it may not be happening, is gratefully received.

Ronaldo’s former United teammate Wayne Rooney has already expressed his doubt over a move.

Now Rio Ferdinand has cryptically hinted he knows more than he is willing to let on. A wordless tweet from Ronaldo’s former teammate suggested he is entertained by what may be about to play out…

Only Rio knows what is going on in his mind here, but now is not the time to be joking around with United fans in mini-meltdown over Ronaldo’s possible move to City.

Could United be plotting a late hijack attempt for Ronaldo?

Journalist Fabrizio Romano stated earlier today that United have had contact with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes.

He did not let on any more than that, and that may be all it is. But we are intrigued.

Ronaldo, at 36, is still a top quality player and a big improvement on Anthony Martial.

If United are plotting a late move, then it would be welcomed, purely to stop him signing with City.

This is a move United could make, and arguably should. At the moment it is not too late.

Rio’s tweet could of course be totally unrelated, but it is, an odd time to post something so cryptic if that is the case.

Any small bit of hope that Ronaldo won’t be wearing City blue this season, well, we will take it at this point.

Here is a look at some of the reaction to Ferdinand’s message…
