There is ongoing debate about the identity of the next Manchester United midfield signing – if there will be one at all.
United want to find a player who fits in alongside the current options – and probably one who offers something a little different. I am here to tell you just how essential it is that the incoming player brings a key missing quality.

They are too nice. Where is the player who will go into a crunching tackle and leave a mark on the opposition?
Casemiro had absolutely no fear of doing so, and his departure leaves a gap in that regard that I do not believe has been filled.
The legendary Roy Keane was the best at it. And yes, they were both ‘walking red cards’ – but you also need that in midfield from time to time.

Football fans remember Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal teams of the late 2000s. They were talented – but they were too soft, and used to get thrown around by Stoke City.
I feel that United’s final midfield signing needs to be an intimidating hard man, one who can strike fear into opponents with just one look.
Youri Tielemans is a great signing at £35 million with fantastic passing attributes, but he also went the entire 2025/26 season without picking up a single yellow card.
That can be a good trait to have, but for every Rio Ferdinand, you need a Nemanja Vidic to balance it out.
I worry that with United relying on a data approach for their signings, the trait of being a ‘hard, intimidating presence’ is a quality that just can’t be quantified with a set of numbers.
Ineos need to get this one right, otherwise United’s new look midfield could be at risk of getting kicked around and outfought, even if they won’t get outplayed.

Dan Gore actually has some of the attributes
There is one young midfielder at the club who has some of the attributes required. Dan Gore is a gritty, combative player who has just schooled himself in League One.
Gore is not afraid to fly into a tackle, and partnered Kobbie Mainoo to great effect in the Youth Cup, offering a great balance.
At just 21, Gore won’t be intimidating any opponent anytime soon, but he will not back down from a challenge either.
He has some attributes that United should want to work with, and could become a protege for the new incoming signing – if Michael Carrick believes there is room for both.
