Peter Schmeichel says when Man Utd will really ‘find out’ how good Senne Lammens is

Senne Lammens was transformational for Manchester United during his debut, as he continues to earn plaudits.

The Belgian goalkeeper had to wait over a month on the sidelines at Manchester United before being given his opportunity, and he grabbed it with both safe hands.

Goalkeeping was seen as Ruben Amorim’s big problem before the game, with Altay Bayindir costing United multiple points this season through poor goalkeeping.

Due to this, Lammens’ comfortable shot-stopping and dominantly claiming high balls were refreshing, leaving fans celebrating these moments as though they were goals.

Lammens was voted United’s man of the match by supporters, ahead of the goal scorers, which shows how badly his debut was needed.

Peter Schmeichel saw Senne Lammens grow during Manchester United debut

The performance of Lammens inspired confidence throughout his entire team. He barely put a foot wrong, and United have now finally replaced David de Gea

As a result of his display, United fans were comparing Lammens to Peter Schmeichel, and now the great Dane has shared his verdict on the young shot stopper.

Speaking on the BBC Sport podcast, Monday Night Club, Schmeichel admitted being impressed, but he warned he wasn’t reacting yet.

“I think his confidence grew [during his debut], you could see from the first cross, Matthijs de Ligt’s reaction was fantastic, defenders want that when they’re under the cosh to take some of that pressure off.

“He’s only young, he’s hardly played any competitive football… Unfortunately, we’ve seen over the years, great players come into Man Utd and the pressure is relentless – then they can’t deal with that. It would be silly for someone like me to put more pressure on him.

“He did well, he’s got an international break now, then the next game he’s got to do the same. Then we see how he develops, all goalkeepers make mistakes; that’s when we find out how good people are.”

Senne Lammens’ next challenge is arguably the biggest in English football

For the Belgian debutant, starting your first game against Sunderland at home is probably as comfortable as he could have wished for.

After the game, Amorim praised Lammens, which was much deserved as he ensured the three points which saved the head coach from further replacement speculation.

However, Lammens’ next performance for United comes at Anfield against Liverpool, which is among the most difficult venues in world football, where he will be tested.

Lammens will face Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak who are all massive goal threats in the game, and so Schmeichel reserving judgement until after this game makes sense.

Liverpool haven’t been at their best, with three defeats on the bounce, and therefore United will have confidence of furthering that record at the Scousers expense, which would push the Red Devils into the top four race.
