Paul Pogba is following in Wayne Rooney’s footsteps as ex-Man United star holds talks

Former Manchester United star Paul Pogba is yet to return to football since serving his doping suspension.

Paul Pogba was handed an 18-month ban from football while at Juventus, reduced down from an initial four-year ban.

As of March 11th, Pogba is eligible to play again but the now 32-year-old is still yet to sign for any club.

According to ESPN, Paul Pogba will wait until the end of the season to sign for a new club so he can take time to assess his options.

There were rumours that Pogba could return to Carrington to train with United while he considers his options, but they were quickly denied.

During his suspension, reports claimed Pogba was in ‘advanced talks’ with Marseille over a potential move.

Pogba also revealed he had offers from Russia, but it seems he instead has his sights set on the United States.

Pogba has been spotted Stateside as he trains for his return, and The Washington Post now claim he has held talks with MLS side DC United.

DC United own Pogba’s MLS discovery rights which prevents other MLS sides from negotiating with him.

United’s all-time top goalscorer Wayne Rooney made the move to DC United in 2018 as a player, before rejoining them as manager in 2022.

It now seems Pogba could follow a similar path by making the move to Washington this summer.

Paul Pogba speaks out on returning to Man United

Pogba has already spent two spells as a Manchester United player, and once his suspension lifted there was talk of another potential return.

Pogba was asked if he would return to United but it seems extremely unlikely given that Ineos are trying to avoid big-money deals for older players.

The Frenchman didn’t exactly leave on great terms either. Pogba’s last-ever United game was in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool where he limped off early.

Pogba suffered with ‘depression’ at United under Jose Mourinho, so it doesn’t seem like he would jump at the chance to return to the club either.

When it comes to signing a new central midfielder, fans can expect Ineos to look elsewhere at much younger – and cheaper – options.
