When Bruno Fernandes scored early on against Roma we wondered if there could be a repeat of the 7-1 scoreline in 2007.

By half-time that was off the table, with Roma moving into a 2-1 lead.

Then the second half happened. United blitzed Roma with five goals and won the game 6-2.

Even with the second leg remaining, the tie looks to be over.

The win was so emphatic in fact, that it matched a long standing European record.

United became the first team since Real Madrid in 1964 to score six goals in a European semi-final.

That’s a 57-year long record. United were dominant, and really, it could quite easily have been more.

The players were understandably delighted with the result and sent messages after the result.

Paul Pogba, Fred, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire were among those to post message on social media.

United’s big win throws up a few interesting team selection decisions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of the second leg.

Rotation was expected against Liverpool this weekend, but Solskjaer may now be tempted to start a stronger team, and rotate a little more for the second leg against Roma.

United won’t be complacent, Solskjaer is too sensible for that. But with a 4-0 advantage, the team have one foot in the final.
