It is going to be a scrap at the top of the Premier League this season.

While Manchester City dropped points against Southampton with a 0-0 draw, Chelsea beat Tottenham 3-0 and Liverpool beat Crystal Palace by same scoreline.

Manchester United’s win over West Ham was hard fought, courtesy of a late winner and even later penalty save from David de Gea.

All the results count, and Paul Pogba’s message after the game reflected the confidence boost this victory has given the team.

Pogba was substituted in the second half as he tired and United looked for a fresh approach. He praised the team’s match winners.

United are joint top of the table on 13 points out of a possible 15. Chelsea and Liverpool both have the same total.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s message also spoke of his satisfaction at getting the win.

This was the first message Wan-Bissaka had posted this past week, with the right-back choosing to stay silent on social media following his red card against Young Boys.

In a title battle?

United’s aspirations this season are to win the Premier League. The club’s summer transfer business speaks for itself, with Cristiano Ronaldo following Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s typical response about a title fight will be that United have to earn it. The team have to pick up enough points to get to April in contention, and then he will acknowledge it.

Last season United showed promise and progress, topping the table in January, before trailing off.

This season United will be looking to last longer and be more consistent, and it is way too early to get carried away.

But all title winning teams need a bit of resilience to them, to be able to turn tough away draws into wins. United showed that against West Ham, and whisper it, but the early signs are looking encouraging.
