Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that this season had not been a success in the wake of their Europa League final loss.

The side came up against well-drilled defensive Villareal that they could not break down, and lost the game 11-10 on penalties.

It is a game they should have won and the loss will certainly reinvigorate the ‘Ole Out’ section of United fans.

After the game Ole was asked on BT Sport whether he thought the season was a success, reaching a European cup final and finishing second in the league – the manager gave a resounding ‘no’.

He said: “When you come out with no trophy you’ve not done everything right.

“We need to get better, simple as. We’ve done really well this season, the start was really difficult. We pushed in the league, maybe got closer to the top than we thought and we got to a final.

“But you need to win these finals to make it a good season.”

A lesson to learn

But the boss left some optimistic words for fans, explaining that improvements have been made and this will be a vital learning curve for the many young players in the squad.

The manager added: “We’re getting closer and closer and better, we were one kick away to have a trophy and a good night.

“We’ve got to have the desire to come back next and make sure we improve and get better.

“It’s a disappointed dressing room. That’s football for you. Sometimes it’s decided on one kick and that’s the difference between winning and losing sometimes.

“We’ve got to taste this feeling and make sure you don’t get it again. We didn’t turn up.”
