Manchester United have found good reason to do business with Bayern Munich in recent seasons.

A double deal for Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt brings the list of players to feature for both Manchester United and Bayern Munich up to eight.

United paid £38 million for De Ligt and £12 million for Mazraoui, deals which could rise by £4 million each with add-ons.

They become the seventh and eighth Manchester United players to also feature for Bayern Munich. Here is a look at the complete list…

Players who have played for Manchester United and Bayern Munich

Mark Hughes

Club legend Mark Hughes spent three years with Manchester United before going on to play for Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The Welshman had one season at the Nou Camp before heading for Bavaria on a season-long loan.

Having won the German Super Cup with Bayern, Sparky returned to Old Trafford in 1988 where he would spend a further seven years.

From 467 appearances for Manchester United, Hughes scored 163 goals and he was named man-of-the-match in the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup final in Rotterdam, where he scored twice in the 2-1 victory over former club Barca.

He scored seven goals from 23 appearances during his solitary season with Bayern

Owen Hargreaves

The versatile Englishman had made over 200 appearances and won 11 trophies with Bayern prior to being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2007.

Injuries blighted Owen Hargreaves’ time at the Theatre of Dreams, but 34 of his 39 appearances for the Red Devils came in a memorable maiden campaign which saw the Reds win the Premier League and Champions League.

United’s former number four, who played the full 120 minutes of the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea, smashed his penalty in the shootout win into the top corner.

Following his release from United due to fitness issues, Hargreaves made four appearances for Manchester City before calling time on his career.

Daley Blind

Fresh after his World Cup exploits with the Netherlands, Louis van Gaal signed his fellow countryman Daley Blind from Ajax in 2014.

The technically-gifted left-footer was a regular under Van Gaal, but Blind’s game time reduced when Jose Mourinho replaced Van Gaal.

The 32-year-old made 141 appearances for United and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League with the Reds before returning to Ajax having been signed by Erik ten Hag.

With his contract in Amsterdam set to expire in the summer, Blind signed for Bayern in 2022/23. He is now playing at Spanish side Girona.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Undoubtedly one of the most decorated midfielders to play the beautiful game, Manchester United unfortunately weren’t getting peak Schweinsteiger when Van Gaal signed the German in 2015.

Having been allowed to leave the Allianz Arena by Pep Guardiola, Schweinsteiger made 35 appearances for United before heading for the MLS with Chicago Fire.

The World Cup and Champions League winner, who won 28 trophies during his career, was frozen out by Mourinho and he only made four appearances under the Portuguese.

Schweinsteiger racked up 500 appearances for Bayern, but at United he was forced out by former boss Jose Mourinho.

Marcel Sabitzer

Marcel Sabitzer was an emergency signing on winter deadline day in 2023 after an injury to midifleder Christian Eriksen.

Sabitzer became the first Bayern Munich player signed by Manchester United on loan, and just the third overall, Hargreaves and Schweinsteigerr.

The Austrian international played a useful role for United and there were some fans who would have been happy for him to sign permanently.

Sabitzer scored twice in the Europa League quarter-final, but missed the FA Cup final due to injury. He later signed with Borussia Dortmund and reached the 2024 Champions League final.

Joshua Zirkzee

Former Bayern Munich prospect Joshua Zirkzee left the German club in August 2022, signing with Italian side Bologna.

Zirkzee’s excellent performances for Bologna in 2023/24 helped the club reach the Champions League last season, before he swapped that for the challenge at Manchester United, becoming the first summer signing of summer 2024.

Matthijs de Ligt

Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has finally joined Manchester United, who wanted to sign him from Ajax in 2019.

De Ligt joined Juventus, before switching to Bayern Munich in 2022, and has now finally clinched his move to United where he will wear the number four shirt.

Noussair Mazraoui

Right-back Noussair Mazraoui becomes the eighth player to represent Bayern Munich and Manchester United, with his deal confirmed minutes after De Ligt’s.

Mazraoui will wear the number three shirt. Like De Ligt, he joined Bayern in 2022, although went there directly from Ajax. Mazraoui was the first Ajax academy player Erik ten Hag handed a debut to.
