It was long overdue. Anthony Martial scored his first Premier League goal of the season at Bramall Lane.
This was his fourth against Sheffield United in 2020, with Martial facing an opponent he seems to enjoy playing against.
Martial now has three in all competitions in 2020/21, with this strike in a 3-2 away victory adding to two Champions League goals.
Martial’s season has been a stop-start one due to suspension, injuries, and a possible loss of confidence.
His performance against Sheffield United provides hope that he can now kick on, and go on a run. Martial can be a streaky player in terms of form, and this could be the game which inspires a goalscoring glut.
What was really encouraging was that Martial’s performance was a strong all round display.
He created three chances, more than any player in the United team, with one assist setting up Marcus Rashford’s winner.
His hold up play was effective, with Martial completed 92 per cent of his passes. United missed this against City.
His own goal showed great alertness, a good run off the ball, and poise and technique to turn and adjust to shoot past Ramsdale.
With Edinson Cavani waiting to come in, there is no guarantee Martial will start the next game at the weekend. However, his performance has given him a strong chance, and the Uruguayan may have to settle for a place on the bench.
