Lukasz Bejger says leaving United is the right decision

Young talent Lukasz Bejger has left Manchester United to move back to his native Poland.

Bejger was part of last season’s FA Youth Cup side and played six matches for the under-23s this season, which included one assist.

The defender is able to play at full-back and centre-back, but despite this versatility, he remained a long way off United’s first team.

He has now signed for top flight Polish side Slask Wroclaw, who currently sit fourth in the division. The fee for his sale was undisclosed.

He says it is a good move

Bejger is very pleased with the transfer. And so he should be. Wroclaw have signed him on a four-and-a-half year deal running to June 2025.

That is tremendous security for a young player who only turned 19 at the start of January.

Bejger told Wroclaw’s website: “I want to gain experience in senior football and constantly improve my skills. For a long time I have been in contact with the sports director Dariusz Sztylka, I also talked to coach Vitezslav Lavička and I was very keen to get to Wrocław.

“The club presented me with an interesting development plan, so I am convinced that I have made the right decision and will be making regular progress in Wrocław.”

Bejger is a Poland under-19 international and breaking into the Wroclaw team should be far easier than it would be at United.

High potential

Wroclaw’s sporting director Dariusz Sztylka spoke highly of Bejger, who first signed for United in 2018.

He told Wroclaw’s website: “He reads the game well, is quick and effective in possession. We want him to develop step by step, getting to know the club and the philosophy of our work.

“He is already showing great skills, but his potential is even greater. Certainly Łukasz has all the predispositions to play at a very high level in the future.”

Even with Bejger’s high potential in mind, his decision to leave highlights the challenges young players face in breaking into the United team.

There was a big queue of players at right-back and centre-back in front of him, and rather than try to prove himself out on loan, Bejger has taken a decisive move and we wish him well in the future.
