Manchester United released David de Gea 13 months ago and since then he’s not played a single match.
Despite how things ended, David de Gea will go down unanimously as a modern-era Manchester United legend.
Through the dark days post-Sir Alex Ferguson, it was the Spaniard who kept many fans going with his immaculate shot-stopping ability and he even won the Golden Glove in his final season with the club.
He was the world’s best goalkeeper for a solid five-year period and we were so lucky to have him that the fax machine incident saw him denied a move to Real Madrid – a club legend for sure and his teammates feel the same way.
545 appearances saw 190 clean sheets and he deserves every bit of praise he got. However, in the end, the club simply required different qualities from a goalkeeper which is why he was ultimately released in July 2023.

De Gea set for Fiorentina move
Ever since United opted to release De Gea 13 months ago, he has remained a free agent, seen training alone at non-league pitches wearing United training gear a few months ago.
But now finally, he is set to return to football according to Fabrizio Romano as he gave De Gea to Fiorentina the famous ‘Here we go’ on Thursday night, as he confirmed De Gea said yes to the Italian side.
De Gea will sign a contract until June 2025 with the option of a further season should both parties agree. His travel and medical are booked already and it seems like a matter of time.
Romano also added on his YouTube that De Gea will earn €2m per year (£1.7m) with an extra €1m (£856k) potentially in add-ons. This works out at £32,692 a week.
Fiorentina has been interested for a while now, but they kept meeting stumbling blocks, however, they did not give up on a deal and now the goalkeeper could be set for a career lifeline.
Fiorentina is an interesting move for De Gea
While it is great to see De Gea back at a club and set to play football once again, the club he has chosen is a little surprising.
Fiorentina are great and rich with history in Italy, however stylistically he does not perfectly fit into the way Fiorentina play football.
During the 2023/24 season, La Viola was Serie A’s third-highest average possession holder (57.7%) – which implies that De Gea could be required to use his feet a lot.
That being said, Fiorentina has a new head coach this season by the name of Raffaele Palladino from Monza – who also ranked highly for possession (7th in Serie A) despite their 12th-place league finish.
De Gea will start for Fiorentina, with the goalkeeping department fairly weak, we just hope he has been practising with his feet and shocks the world.
