Harry Maguire has narrowly avoided a match ban after Man United defeat to Newcastle

Harry Maguire made a fourth consecutive start in the Premier League during Manchester United’s defeat to Newcastle United.

The 31-year-old dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford at the start of the season but is now enjoying a comeback under Ruben Amorim.

Amorim is “desperate” to extend Harry Maguire’s contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The Portuguese head coach does not want to lose Harry Maguire as a free agent having been impressed by his attitude at Carrington. Maguire’s “aggressive” comments this month aligned with what Amorim has been asking for from his players.

Maguire started for United against Newcastle and was spotted arguing with Casemiro after Alexander Isak’s opener. Despite the team’s poor performance, Amorim trusted Maguire to play the full 90 minutes.

Harry Maguire avoids one-match suspension

Heading into Monday evening’s clash against Newcastle, Maguire was on a tally of four yellow cards in the Premier League.

Manuel Ugarte was suspended against Newcastle after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves. Bruno Fernandes also missed out after being sent off.

If Maguire picked up a booking against Newcastle, he would have been suspended for United’s trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

However, the yellow card counter has now been reset after the Newcastle defeat with United exactly halfway through the 38-game Premier League season.

There were no other United players at risk of suspension with Diogo Dalot the only player on three yellow cards behind Maguire.

Man United squad update ahead of Liverpool trip

After missing the Newcastle defeat, Ugarte and Fernandes will both be back available against Liverpool.

Amorim will likely make changes to his midfield after Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggled against the Magpies.

Mason Mount is out for “several weeks” following his injury in the Manchester derby so he will miss the trip to Anfield.

Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof are also injury doubts for the Liverpool match, meaning Diogo Dalot will likely keep his spot at left wing-back.
