Ruben Amorim is putting pressure on Man United chiefs to get one deal done quickly, he is ‘desperate’

Ruben Amorim is now aware just how much work is needed to turn things around at Manchester United.

At the start of December, Ruben Amorim warned Manchester United fans that “the storm will come” just hours after beating Everton 4-0.

Those comments came after the first of nine games in December. The disappointing 2-0 defeat to Wolves marked the fifth loss of the month and Ruben Amorim will now be desperate to end the year on a high when the Red Devils face Newcastle United on Monday evening.

After Monday’s visit from high-flying Newcastle, attention will turn to the January transfer window – Amorim’s first opportunity to make changes to his squad.

Amorim has urged United to sign a left-wing back, while the Red Devils continue to be linked with midfielders and strikers in January. However, Amorim’s first action could be extending the contract of a current player.

Ruben Amorim ‘desperate’ to keep Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire is set to become a free agent in the summer when his contract expires with United yet to trigger an extension to his deal. As it stands, he is free to talk to clubs in January.

The 31-year-old came extremely close to leaving in 2023 when United accepted a £30m bid for Maguire only for a move to West Ham to collapse late on.

Reports suggested United set a £10m asking price for Maguire ahead of January, but the former United captain could be handed a lifeline by Amorim.

According to GiveMeSport, Amorim is “putting pressure” on the hierarchy at Old Trafford to extend Maguire’s deal by 12 months.

The report adds that Amorim is “desperate” to ensure Maguire’s head is not turned over the winter window when he is free to talk to clubs about a potential 2025 move.

What Ruben Amorim has said about Harry Maguire

With Matthijs de Ligt struggling with illness in recent weeks, Maguire has stepped up and made three consecutive starts in the Premier League.

Having previously played some of his best football in a back three, Maguire has done well at the heart of United’s defence, even if that hasn’t translated into positive results.

Amorim has been impressed by Maguire’s attitude, which suggests why he wants to keep him at Old Trafford beyond January.

“He works really well, he is focused on the job and not what people say,” Amorim said about Maguire after the Wolves defeat.

With Bruno Fernandes suspended for the Newcastle clash, Maguire could captain United on Monday in a show of faith by Amorim.
