Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has now had his say on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s potential return as Manchester United caretaker manager for the 2025-26 season.

Ruben Amorim’s abrupt exit from United left Darren Fletcher to take charge of the Premier League club’s 2-2 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

Fletcher, who is the current Manchester United Under-18s head coach, is believed to be a temporary caretaker manager for the Red Devils’ first-team squad.

United are tipped to put an interim head coach in place until the remainder of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford.

Man Utd legend Gary Neville compares Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to two ‘really fantastic people’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be the favourite to become Manchester United caretaker manager and reports have suggested the Red Devils are in talks with him.

The 52-year-old United legend is not the only name linked with the interim role, with fellow club legends Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy also connected with the position.

Michael Carrick served in Solskjaer’s United coaching staff, while Ruud van Nistelrooy was caretaker manager in the 2024-25 season after the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

Gary Neville insisted that former United teammates Solskjaer, Carrick and Van Nistelrooy are all “really fantastic people” amid being linked with a Red Devils return.

“They put Ryan [Giggs] in charge 10 years ago, then Ole came in charge and you go back to the old boys, then you go for a new one, then you go for more experience,” he told Sky Sports.

“It is almost like a cycle, like a movie we have all seen before and Groundhog Day.

“What I do think is [that] Ole is someone who absolutely loves the club, he knows the job, he has been in the job.

“The other names that have been mentioned – Michael Carrick, Ruud van Nistelrooy – these are really fantastic people.”

Gary Neville sends a message to Man Utd legends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy

Gary Neville shared the pitch with Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy during their respective — and prolific — playing spells under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 50-year-old former United captain wished the aforementioned trio “all the best” amid whichever one becomes the Red Devils’ next caretaker manager this season.

“I trained with those guys for a lot of years,” Neville continued.

“They love the club intensely, they get the club, but still they are going to come under a lot of pressure in [the] next four or five months if results don’t go their way and they are going to have to be ready for that.

“Whoever is going to get it out of those three who are being mentioned, I wish them all the best because it is a tough role.”

Ruben Amorim’s reign as United manager lasted only 14 months and the 40-year-old Portuguese manager’s last match in charge was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.
