A timeline of all Manchester United captains in the Premier League era

Manchester United have had some simply phenomenal captains in the past.

At a notoriously successful club like Manchester United, it’s vitally important to have a commanding captain to lead on the pitch.

The armband at Old Trafford has adorned shoulders of immense responsibility and honour. Each captain has brought a unique style of leadership, shaping the ethos and identity of the club for years to come.

Here are the Manchester United captains past and present in the Premier League era.

Bryan Robson: 1982 – 1994

Bryan Robson was Manchester United’s captain for 12 long years and one of the best in the club’s history. It’s worth noting he co-captained with Steve Bruce during 1992 – 1994.

Steve Bruce: 1994 – 1996

Steve Bruce was a great captain at Old Trafford – who led the Red Devils to four Premier League titles from 1992 – 1996, alongside Robson for the first two.

Eric Cantona: 1996 – 1997

King Eric Cantona took the reigns of the United captaincy from 1996 – 1997. An absolute legend around Carrington – Cantona embodied exactly what it means to be a Red Devils captain.

Roy Keane is Manchester United’s best-ever captain. The notorious hardman spent eight years with the armband, cementing god status around Old Trafford. He was also the most successful captain, winning trophies galore – including the infamous treble.

A product of the academy with the Class of ’92Gary Neville is one of the most influential players in Manchester United’s history. He was also a phenomenal leader and captain figure for the squad over six years.

Nemanja Vidic: 2011 – 2014

Nemanja Vidic, one of the toughest players in United’s history, made a fitting captain. The Serbian wore the armband with pride for three years from 2011 to 2014.

Wayne Rooney: 2014 – 2017

Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer, with 253 goals for the club. He took captaincy in his later years between 2014 – 2017.

Michael Carrick: 2017 – 2018
