Manchester United must quickly turn their attention towards hiring a new permanent head coach after deciding to sack Ruben Amorim.

Just a few months ago, Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly supported Ruben Amorim and insisted he wanted to give him three years at Old Trafford to prove himself.

But it is very rare in football that anything ever goes to plan and Amorim was sacked by United on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after his comments about the club hierarchy surfaced.

So far, Oliver Glasner is favourite to replace Amorim at Old Trafford, although it is still extremely early in the manager search.

Darren Fletcher has stepped in as interim boss, and United could wait until the summer before making a long-term appointment.

David Ornstein names two Man Utd manager candidates

It was journalist David Ornstein who first broke the news of Ruben Amorim’s sacking at United, and he has now had his say on who could replace him in the hot seat.

Speaking on Sky Sports Back Pages podcast, Ornstein was asked to name who he thinks could land the United job.

“They weren’t at the top of your list there, but the two who got the furthest last time before the Amorim appointment, I think it was spring or summer of 2024, is Thomas Tuchel,” Ornstein said.

“Off the back of England’s World Cup campaign, let’s see what happens there.

“Manchester United do seem willing to give this time to conduct a proper process. He’s a top manager, a winner, very popular with players and develops and uses young players too.

“And [Roberto] De Zerbi. Pep Guardiola has spoken about him publicly as being one of the best coaches in world football.

“Many people have their views on him. But I’m always fascinated to see what De Zerbi might be able to do at the very top level of European football. So, yeah, I’m going to look at those two.”

Ineos reputation will ride on next manager

It has been two years since Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority takeover of United, and while there have been plenty of positives such as the improved recruitment, there have also been plenty of head-scratching decisions made.

There has been a huge churn of jobs at almost every level, and even within the senior leadership group, Dan Ashworth was sacked within five months of joining the club.

The handling of Erik ten Hag and Amorim’s departure has been far from smooth, so naturally, any trust in Ineos is deteriorating.

The next manager appointment is a pivotal decision for the ownership and the board. If it goes wrong again, supporters will not be forgiving.
