Manchester United are now on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Ruben Amorim but any trust in Sir Jim Ratcliffe will already be dented.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the leadership team at Manchester United chose to sack Ruben Amorim on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

Amorim lashed out at the board in his post-match comments, hinting that he wanted more control and less interference from sporting director Jason Wilcox.

In United’s official sacking statement for Amorim, it is made clear that the decision was made “reluctantly”.

Amorim spoke highly of Ratcliffe and his relationship with the United co-owner, but the British billionaire did not hesitate to pull the trigger.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe broke his ‘three-year’ promise to Ruben Amorim

Following a rocky start to the season, Ratcliffe publicly backed Amorim and eased the pressure on his job.

Ratcliffe said: “He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be.”

However, Ratcliffe’s guarantee of three years hardly lasted three months before Amorim was kicked out.

Amorim is right to feel betrayed by Ineos, and especially Ratcliffe, who was backing him to be a long-term success at Old Trafford.

At the start of the season, Amorim wanted to stay for 20 years as United head coach, but it became clear before and after the Leeds match that he was frustrated with how the club was being run.

Next Man United manager may not trust Sir Jim Ratcliffe

United are now on the search for their next head coach, and Ratcliffe will likely play a central role in the hiring process alongside CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Wilcox.

However, the next head coach may take any of Ratcliffe’s future comments with a pinch of salt after watching how Amorim’s future unfolded.

Clearly, Ratcliffe’s support for Amorim wasn’t enough to keep him in a job, even though Amorim was on track to qualify for European football.

United need the bond between a manager and the club hierarchy to be strong and trustworthy, but Ratcliffe’s comments have not aged well at all.
