Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has emerged as a top target in Manchester United’s search for a new head coach in the hours that followed on from Ruben Amorim’s sacking.

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday morning following a bizarre post-match press conference.

After travelling to Elland Road on Sunday, United drew 1-1 against Leeds.

Amorim aimed a dig at Ineos after the game, making his job untenable at Old Trafford, with Darren Fletcher stepping in as interim manager for the foreseeable future.

This means United will now begin a search for the new head coach to succeed Amorim.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has made four recommendations for Ineos to consider.

Man Utd leaning towards Oliver Glasner appointment

It was only a matter of time before candidates would emerge for the United job.

After poor results at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, United were linked with several replacements for Amorim. That was before Sir Jim Ratcliffe rubbished those claims that suggested there was a three-year plan in place for the former Sporting CP boss at Old Trafford.

Three months on and with Amorim sacked, United find themselves in the market for a new head coach. That means Ineos now have another big decision to make, after a series of mistakes that have contributed to this dire situation.

According to The Independent, United view Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner as a top candidate to succeed Amorim, with the club contemplating a summer appointment of a permanent coach.

This will raise alarm bells among United fans because Glasner’s Palace play with a similar situation to the one Amorim tried during his tepid spell as head coach.

The report includes other candidates from United’s head coach shortlist. It features Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, the recently sacked Enzo Maresca, and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.

It remains to be seen if Fletcher will remain interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Glasner was deemed one of the favourites to replace Amorim earlier this season as speculative reports emerged in September.

Palace were flying in the Premier League at the time, playing with a back three system, while United started the campaign slowly.

Speaking to reporters at the time, Glasner was asked about the possibility of replacing Amorim at United.

He admitted he was aware of the rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford, and there has been uncertainty over whether he will stay at Selhurst Park after this season.

“I follow all the rumours – and that’s all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed,” Glasner said, as per The Mirror.

“Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”
