Ronaldo netted twice against Republic of Ireland to move clear of Ali Daei’s record.
Daei’s record of 109 goals had stood since 2006 and Ronaldo tied it at Euro 2020.
Ronaldo scored two late goals to help Portugal beat Ireland 2-1 and set the record in the process.
An incredible achievement
Ronaldo’s achievement has been recognised as an official world record.
It came after he was presented with the Euro 2020 Golden Boot award before the game.
The record is one which may never be broken with Ronaldo set to carry on playing for his country and try to move further clear of Daei.
Ronaldo made his international debut in 2003 and scored his first goals for his country in 2004.
Of his 111 international goals, 97 have come from without penalties and 91 have come in competitive non-friendly matches.
It really is an incredible achievement and for Ronaldo to be associated with Manchester United makes us even more proud, and that was before his return.
Now he is back as a Manchester United player and he has this record to add to his pedigree as the Champions League all-time record goalscorer.
Ronaldo will return to Manchester United with a real spring in his step next week.
Even at 36-years-old Ronaldo is still one of the game’s great players and his records give him real claim to be the greatest of all time.
If he can lead Manchester United to more major trophies over the coming seasons it will only strengthen his claim.
Ronaldo’s longevity and consistency is part of what makes him so great. He has scored at every single major international tournament since and including Euro 2004.
There is a real chance he is playing at the top level into his 40s.
