Bruno Fernandes has only been a Manchester United player for five years but he will go down as a club great.

Given the storied history of Manchester United, it takes something special for a player to be remembered and despite how polarising he can be, Bruno Fernandes will be remembered.

In an era which has seen United fans have very little to shout about – Fernandes has been one of the only consistent performers and in another era, he would be an instant icon at Old Trafford.

This season is the worst United have experienced during the Premier League era – regardless of how things end – yet Fernandes has still racked up impressive numbers.

Without the Portuguese midfielder, United would genuinely be in a relegation battle, as he and Amad are the two players to assist more than one goal in the league this season.

Bruno has 12 assists in total, while also being in double digits for goals with 10. This has taken Fernandes to 89 total goals for United in 271 games.

This has the captain just one goal behind Anthony Martial who has 90 in 317. When told this by United club media, Fernandes admitted he could not wait to pass the Frenchman and to text him about it.

“One goal behind him? He will be a good one to overtake so I can text him and tell him that I have scored more goals than him!”

Goal scoring is not the main quality associated with Fernandes, but the amount of times he finds the net from midfield is invaluable for the Red Devils.

Despite only playing 271 times for the club, Fernandes finds himself ahead of Eric Cantona and David Beckham for goals scored to sit 21st in the top scorer charts for the club all time.

Fernandes can definitely catch Bryan Robson in the charts, perhaps even this season – and if he manages to prolong his career in midfield under Amorim while still scoring double figures he could have aspirations of pushing toward the top 10.

With his contract expiring in 2027 – which will see him aged 33 – Fernandes is on track to be a modern-day legend, especially if he plays a part in restoring United to the top of the sport.
