Anthony Martial has not had the greatest of months since scoring his first Manchester United goal of the season against Everton.

Martial was withdrawn early from that game, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stating via the club website: “Unfortunately he got a knock and had to come off.”

Martial still linked up with the France squad in October, although did not play.

Since returning to Manchester United, Martial has not played a single minute.

Despite being pictured in training from the first session he returned from international duty, he did not feature in a matchday squad until the Atalanta away game, and did not travel to London.

Against City, United preferred an ill Marcus Rashford from the bench rather than use Martial.

The Telegraph reported this week that several United stars are frustrated with a lack of game time, with Martial one of the eight players named.

A video on Anthony Martial’s wife Melanie’s Instagram page has added confusion to the striker’s status.

In a video Q&A with a friend, they were asked a question about Martial’s injuries.

Melanie stayed silent, but her unnamed pal stated: “He is a professional football player and he knows how to deal with injury. And by the way, he was not injured at all.”

So what is going on with Martial?

After spending a week on holiday in Dubai with his wife, Martial is back in Manchester.

Martial was pictured in training in pictures released by the club just yesterday.

So as far as this weekend against Watford goes, Martial is healthy and available for selection.

As for what went on before, well, the truth may be somewhere in between.

As reported by French website Gentside Sport a fortnight ago, Martial may actually have been out with food poisoning.

After posting a picture of Martial at home on an exercise bike watching United take on Tottenham because he was not in the squad, Melanie stated he is ‘fine’, he had just been unwell.

So the latest claim from her pal that Martial was not ‘injured’ is technically correct, he was just unwell.

The word ‘pubalgia’ is French for a muscle strain. So there has been some confusion somewhere, as Solskjaer has only suggested he had a knock after the Everton game.

Martial seems to be fully healthy now. But it is certainly uncomfortable for United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when his authority is questioned like this by the player’s wife – and also probably for Martial too.

But it’s hard to blame Martial for being frustrated with how his season has gone, as he has just lost his place in the France squad, missing out on the November internationals.

There is plenty of competition in attack at United, and he needs to take advantage of any game time he gets between now and the end of the year.

Rumours are likely to circle over his future in January, with Calciomercato last week reporting he was on a list of possible targets for Juventus.

This season Martial has so far played just 155 minutes in the Premier League, scoring once.
