Man Utd should take note of Dwight Yorke’s damning assessment of Bruno Guimarães

Bruno Guimarães faces an uncertain future at Newcastle, but former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has made it clear he doesn’t want the Brazilian midfielder at Old Trafford.

There has been intense speculation regarding Bruno Guimarães’ future at Newcastle, with suggestions that the 28-year-old could move to Arsenal.

Manchester United have been mentioned in some of these reports, but that was inevitable at a time when everyone knows the Reds are in the market for midfielders.

The Reds are expected to sign three midfielders this summer, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans being the first two. It remains to be seen who the third midfield arrival will be as United revamp a crucial department in the squad.

Dwight Yorke raises valid point about Bruno Guimarães

There is no denying that Guimarães has been a brilliant player for Newcastle since joining from Lyon in 2022, but that doesn’t justify the £75m price tag that has been put on the 28-year-old this summer.

Guimarães is under contract until 2028, so Newcastle are not under any pressure to sell the Brazil international this summer. Furthermore, Newcastle are going to want big money after securing £100m when selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham earlier in the window.

Meanwhile, United have signed Santos and Tielemans for approximately £10m more than what Newcastle want for Guimarães.

Former United striker Dwight Yorke has told BOYLE Sports that Guimarães wasn’t convincing enough during Brazil’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

Yorke also called for United to sign Lille starlet Ayyoub Bouaddi.

“I don’t know about Bruno Guimarães. I’m not sure he has been that impressive. I watched him play for Brazil at the World Cup and he’s not convinced me. I think he’s good. He’s shown that at Newcastle United. He’s got a good work ethic. I understand the value of that. But is that what you’re paying for when you sign a player to come to Manchester United? A good work ethic?

“Listen, he’s a solid player and maybe he’s good enough to get into a team at the level Manchester United should be at but is going to take them to another level? Will Bruno Guimarães put United any closer to the Premier League title? If so, he’s a good signing. But he doesn’t excite me. I’m not seeing him picking up a ball and boom, sending over one of those diagonal passes or cutting defenders apart with one ball. I just don’t see that quality from him.

“That’s why his performances for Brazil worried me. He was just another solid player in that team. They’re all solid players. I’m not saying he’s not a good player but is that where United are at now? Just buying players because they’re solid? Bring me players that are going to make us superior! I’m not so sure that’s Bruno Guimarães.

“The World Cup was an opportunity for him to tell the world there’s a reason why a team like Manchester United are going to be after me, and he’s come up short, in my opinion.

“Give me Bouaddi any day of the week ahead of those guys.”

United’s third signing needs to be the right profile to complement Kobbie Mainoo, Santos and Tielemans – and Yorke has outlined why he doesn’t think Guimarães is that player.

The biggest factor that goes against Guimarães is the transfer fee that Newcastle will demand. They’ve already pulled the wool over Tottenham’s eyes this summer.

Bruno Guimarães reaches agreement with Arsenal

Reports in France suggest Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Guimarães.

According to L’Equipe, Arsenal and Guimarães have agreed on a five-year contract that would run until 2031.

Now it’s up to Arsenal to reach an agreement with Newcastle, which is a significant hurdle to overcome to complete any deal.

This also suggests that Guimarães has made up his mind.
