Why Ederson’s £38m move to Manchester United has not been made official yet

Manchester United are yet to officially announce Ederson as a new signing despite reports of an agreement last month.

It has been a whole month since Manchester United struck a £38m deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta.

The Brazilian midfielder is set to become Michael Carrick’s first official signing as permanent head coach, but the club is yet to make the move official.

Ederson was called up to the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup after the agreement was reached, so his focus is now on trying to win the tournament this summer.

What is holding up Ederson’s move to Man United?

During his time at the World Cup, Ederson spoke about his United move and claimed that “all that’s left is for me to wait”.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed on YouTube that there is one crucial step left to be completed, which is why United are yet to announce the move.

‘‘They have a verbal agreement with Atalanta, so the two clubs have an agreement since one month ago, but they’re waiting for Ederson to have the second part of his medical with Manchester United in England before approving everything,” Romano said.

“So verbal agreement club-to-club, documents prepared, first part of the medical done, but waiting on the second part of the medical, the official one with Manchester United, that’s why Ederson to Man Utd is not official yet.’’

Ederson will join Man United after the World Cup

The delay to the announcement is causing anxiety in the United fanbase, but the deal is done.

The only hiccup that could make the Ederson deal problematic is if he suffered an injury at the World Cup with Brazil.

But assuming that Ederson completes the tournament without an injury, he will travel to Manchester to complete his medical and officially sign for the club.

United’s pre-season training begins on 9 July, but Ederson will be given an extended break this summer after being called into World Cup action.
