Man Utd have just signed the player Liverpool should have bought to replace Brazil star, says ESPN expert

Former Scotland international Don Hutchison believes Liverpool have made a mistake by not trying to sign Atalanta’s Ederson ahead of his summer transfer to Manchester United.

Preparations have begun at Manchester United for the 2026/27 season, with targets being identified and deals pursued.

Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach at the end of the past season, so he will be part of the planning process as United revamp the midfield department following Casemiro’s departure.

United have acted quickly by reaching an agreement over Ederson. The rest of the deal should be a straightforward process as we wait patiently for an official announcement from both clubs.

Liverpool missed out on Ederson transfer

A deal has been arranged for Ederson to sign for United in a £34m plus £3.8m in potential add-ons for the Brazil international.

Ederson is set to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford, also giving the club an option to extend his stay for an additional 12 months.

The 26-year-old has yet to complete his medical, but he is on the verge of becoming Carrick’s first signing as United’s head coach.

Given his flexibility as a midfielder, Ederson looks a smart signing as United look to rebuild their midfield with Casemiro.

Former Scotland international Don Hutchison has given his verdict on Ederson to ESPN, stating that United are getting the Brazilian at a “bargain” and that Liverpool should have signed him as Fabinho’s replacement.

“He’s the player I thought Liverpool would have got when Fabinho left,” Hutchison said.

“Outstanding player. Ederson is completely different [to Ugarte]. He’s all over the pitch; he’s all-action. He plugs gaps, he’s aggressive, and gets the odd goal.

“He’s one of those players that when Man Utd play you will probably look at Bruno Fernandes, look at Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko, your eyes might not catch Ederson, but honestly he is a manager’s dream.

“For £36m at 26 he’s an absolute bargain; he’ll slot right in there.

“He’s a real team player and a superb footballer, it’s a great signing.”

Man Utd must wait to complete Ederson deal

According to The Sun, Ederson’s transfer to United will only be fully processed in early July.

The reason for this is that Ederson is joining from an overseas (Italy) club.

Italy’s transfer system and the international clearing systems (FIFA’s ITC) will not process his registration to the English FA until the standard international benchmark of July 1.

That means Ederson cannot legally be registered on United’s squad list until July.
