What Ralf Rangnick said about Matheus Cunha when he signed Man Utd target in 2018

Manchester United look increasingly likely to sign Matheus Cunha this summer, with it becoming clear he is the number one target.

With Ruben Amorim’s team struggling to score or create goals, this summer is expected to see Ineos prioritise overhauling the ranks.

In order to do so, Manchester United are thought to be targeting a player in their prime, and also a younger option who would have the chance to bed into Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system without the pressure of being an immediate starter.

Right now, no player looks more likely that Matheus Cunha who United are close to agreeing personal terms for, with the Brazilian one of the Premier League’s best players right now.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that there is a great relationship between Cunha, Amorim and United, with all signs pointing in the direction of Ineos recruiting the Wolves star this summer.

This relationship between the pair was clear to see at Old Trafford on Sunday during the 1-0 defeat, with Amorim walking with his arm around Cunha down the tunnel.

With Amorim clearly a fan, any concern United might have had about Cunha’s attitude can be put to rest.

What Ralf Rangnick said about Matheus Cunha in 2018

Cunha has now had two brilliant back-to-back seasons for Wolves and has earned his big move, potentially to Old Trafford. United have had an interest in Cunha for years, stretching back to his days at Atletico Madrid.

Before this, former caretaker manager of United, Ralf Rangnick had spoken highly of Cunha when he actually signed the Brazilian to RB Leipzig when he was the sporting director.

“Matheus Cunha is a highly interesting striker who, with his age, speed, and offensive drive, fits very well into our philosophy. Especially in finishing, he shows great qualities.”

This is high praise from Rangnick, who has an incredible level of talent ID and does not hold back. While interim boss, Ragnick commented on United’s squad needing heart surgery, which remains true three years on.

The praise of Cunha remains true, albeit he is a more complete player not than he was, while his finishing is one of the biggest positives, considering how difficult goalscoring has been this season.

Matheus Cunha will also be known to Manchester United recruitment director Christopher Vivell

While it was Rangnick who signed Cunha, at the same time, United’s current head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, was at Leipzig’s sister club RB Salzburg.

The two clubs are known to have close relationships with players often transferring between the two, and therefore, Vivell must have been aware of Cunha’s quality as early as 2018.

With the brains now leading the recruitment drive within Carrington, if a deal for Cunha is pursued, it would be safe to assume that they will be certain of his suitability to the demands of United.

Cunha has the ability and on-field presence which United lack and he would immediately go next to Bruno Fernandes as the club’s most important player in offence.

It would be a very exciting move from Ineos and one which could lift United up a level immediately.
