Manchester United are in talks with the agent of Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha, Fabrizio Romano has reported.

The Mail report Cunha is keen on a move to Manchester United, after just one season in the Spanish capital.

Earlier in his career Cunha was recruited by none other than Ralf Rangnick, who oversaw a deal to bring him to RB Leipzig from Swiss side FC Sion.

The former Manchester United interim boss spoke highly of the Brazilian forward, quoted by RB Leipzig’s official channels in 2018.

Rangnick spoke highly of Matheus Cunha

Rangnick recruited Cunha to RB Leipzig after he scored 10 goals as a teenager in Switzerland.

He said: “Matheus Cunha is a highly interesting striker who, with his age, his speed and his offensive drive, fits very well into our philosophy. He shows great qualities, especially when scoring goals.”

Cunha’s highlight at the club was a sensational goal against Bayer Leverkusen which won the Bundesliga goal of the year award.

His spell at the German club did not last, however, stuck behind Timo Werner, and he made the switch to Hoffenheim, before earning a spell at Atletico Madrid.

Cunha has since gone on to represent Brazil, after scoring 21 goals for the country’s under-23 team.

La Liga expert Guillem Balague has said that Atletico Madrid still want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, which adds a further twist to the situation as Manchester United look for potential strike additions.

United’s squad needs remoulding, as Ralf Rangnick pointed out earlier in 2022. The club chose not to listen, and appear to have left a lot of required business until the last minute.

It would be an interesting move to now sign a striker picked out by Rangnick with high potential, to see if Erik ten Hag can turn him into a star.
