Dean Henderson’s future is one of the main talking points of Manchester United’s summer.
Both Henderson and backup stopper Sergio Romero have had better seasons than David de Gea, which poses a dilemma for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Daily Mail have offered an update on United’s preferred destination for Henderson this summer.
Henderson heading abroad?
The Mail report that United would prefer to loan Henderson abroad for the 2020/21 campaign.
They claim that United aren’t adverse to sending him to Sheffield United for a third straight season, but would rather he went abroad.
United don’t want to strengthen a Premier League rival – Chelsea and Arsenal are also named in the report as potentially interested.
The Blades look to be exploring other goalkeeping options, and the Mail covers their recent bid for Aaron Ramsdale, stating Bournemouth are holding out for £25 million, which indicates they’re not confident of getting Henderson again.
Where might Henderson end up?
The prospect of a loan abroad opens up a host of new possibilities for Henderson.
Perhaps Germany would be his most likely destination, with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham making the move from England to Germany in recent times.
Ideally, he would get some experience at European level.
That would likely impress England boss Gareth Southgate, as well as allowing Henderson to show Solskjaer he can compete at that higher level.
Perhaps Henderson also needs to show he can deal with the pressure at a club where the expectation is to win most weeks.
That also creates different demands on the goalkeeper; they may not be involved as often, but they’ve got to keep focus and make one or two big saves when called upon.
Impressing abroad, preferably in the Champions League, would be a fantastic next step for Henderson. Let’s see how it pans out.
