Thompson is a highly-rated winger who, at 18 years old, is on the brink of a first-team breakthrough.

Ajayi was one of United’s brightest talents in the 2025/26 season, and a first-team breakthrough seemed imminent.
Michael Carrick made it clear that United wanted to strengthen their left-wing options and Ineos opted to sign a young, exciting talent rather than a ready-made first-team star.
Thompson was included in first-team training this week directly after his move was confirmed, and he could appear in the next pre-season friendly against Rosenborg on Friday.
It is a clear signal that Thompson is already ahead of Ajayi in Carrick’s pecking order.
Ajayi could still get first-team opportunities to prove himself this summer, but now there is even more pressure for him to make the most of it.

It is important to note that Ajayi is still just 17 years old and is therefore a year behind Thompson in his development.
A regular matchday spot was always going to be out of reach for Ajayi this season, but Thompson’s arrival means minutes will be extremely hard to come by.

With that in mind, there is a possibility that Ajayi could leave on loan this season to get regular first-team minutes elsewhere.
When he returns to Carrington as a first-team experienced 18-year-old, then Carrick and the United staff can reassess whether Ajayi can compete with Thompson for a spot.
