Manchester United’s January window was more an exercise in getting the squad and finances right for the summer window than any rebuild mid-season.
It was reflected in their incoming and outgoing list, with the latter far outweighing the former in terms of personnel, including senior team and academy.
Marcus Rashford heads the list of departures, moving to Aston Villa and freeing up massive wages in the process, while Tyrell Malacia was the last out of the door.
Malacia moved to PSV and as the details surrounding the move emerge, it becomes clear that he made the choice that Man Utd would’ve been fair in expecting from their academy product.

Tyrell Malacia’s Man Utd exit could’ve gone differently
Malacia’s days at Old Trafford looked numbered despite United being undermanned on the left because he’d been subbed off at half-time in every appearance under Ruben Amorim.
Benfica looked like early favourites for Malacia but that move collapsed due to United not being satisfied with the loan fee involved.
Malacia eventually found a home back in the Netherlands, joining PSV on loan with a buy option that means he could have played his last game for the club.

Now, Dutch outlet Voetbal Verslaafd has reported that Malacia could have gone to Wolves and stayed in the Premier League but he chose to join PSV instead.
Malacia hadn’t set the world alight at United since his return from injury but it’s still solace for the club that there isn’t a prospect of him facing them next season, something that can’t be said for Marcus Rashford.
Malacia made the choice Marcus Rashford should have
As an academy product, it was fair to assume that Rashford wouldn’t have wanted to play for another Premier League club out of his respect for Man Utd.
By his own admission after the move, many clubs were interested in him but Aston Villa was the “clear choice for him”, which speaks volumes about how he feels about United.
Premier League rules mean Rashford won’t line up against United this season while he’s on loan but the buy option in his deal means he could very well be a fixture against the club from next season onwards.
Everyone knows that football is business at the end of the day and both players and the clubs have to make the decision that’s best for them.
However, Rashford’s conduct, even in silence, throughout this whole saga has left a sour taste in the mouths of many Man Utd fans.
This development around Malacia only reinforces that feeling.
