Rennes have responded to increased interest in Eduardo Camavinga and say they could be open to a sale this summer.

The Mail report United plan to step up interest in the Ligue 1 midfielder.

Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice clarified that there has currently been no offer for the 18-year-old.

Speaking to TV Rennes reported by GFFN, Maurice stated: “Honestly, it is difficult to respond because today we have not had a single offer that has arrived at the president’s office.”

Not leaving for free

Camavinga has one year left on his contract. Rennes want to extend his deal but have been trying for a year, unsuccessfully.

Maurice is quite adamant Camavinga will not be leaving on a free transfer.

This means he is prepared to sanction a sale this summer if a contract extension cannot be agreed.

The sporting director said: “Tomorrow, pre-season begins. We will have discussions with him tomorrow to understand what he wants and how he is feeling.

“I am calm because we have a situation there there is a player who is still at Rennes. It seems that big clubs are looking at the player. Now, we are waiting to see. I think that Eduardo will not want to leave Rennes for free. So either we find an agreement this summer, or we will find a way to extend him.”

United have an opportunity to push for Camavinga, and the player may be tempted by such a huge move.

Rennes will be saying to him that it is in his interests to stay an extra year, but they want him to commit to more than that.

If he signs a new deal he will be under contract likely until 2025 or 2026, and at that point Rennes can start charging clubs major transfer fees, which may end up denying him a move.

Right now Camavinga is in a strong position, where what he wants, counts. If he wants to move on, he will likely get what he wants. He has a big reputation with sides like United showing interest, and with just one year left on his deal, there is a limit to what Rennes can demand.

If they ask for too much United will simply threaten to wait it out and sign him on a free. Rennes have shown their hand early and made clear this is something they don’t want to happen.
