Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen faces tough decision as MLS clubs battle Ajax

Manchester United should make more midfield changes in 2025 and two experienced players seem destined for the Old Trafford exit.

Manchester United simply had to add a midfielder over the summer.

Kobbie Mainoo’s rise has been breathtaking to witness but the United talent can’t do it all on his own.

Manuel Ugarte joined United on deadline day after weeks of speculation surrounding a move to sign him rom Paris Saint-Germain.

Ugarte is being eased into life at United gradually but will hopefully become a fixture of the midfield for years to come.

Ugarte’s arrival was only phase one of United’s midfield rejuvenation and we can expect more changes to come in 2025.

Christian Eriksen wanted in Major League Soccer

A couple of experienced players will surely be on the way out in January or at the end of the season.

Casemiro is wanted in Saudi Arabia and it would be a surprise to see the Brazilian as a United player at the start of next term.

Then there is Christian Eriksen, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

The Dane – who impressed on international duty with Denmark – has returned to the United starting XI of late but is still expected to leave on a free transfer.

TalkSPORT now claim that Eriksen is attracting major interest ahead of 2025.

It’s stated that Ineos want to bring the average age of the United squad down and Eriksen is likely to be let go as a result.

Saudi Arabian clubs are unsurprisingly keen, but it’s also suggested that MLS team are interested in signing Eriksen.

Eriksen may be given the opportunity to play in Major League Soccer, which could appeal as the United States gear up to host the 2026 World Cup.

Eriksen faces big decision

The report highlights that Ajax are also keen to sign Eriksen in a potentially emotional move.

Eriksen joined Ajax from Odense as a teenager and emerged as a star in Amsterdam before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

A move to Ajax was rumoured recently but Eriksen stayed put – and Ajax seemingly maintain their interest in bringing Eriksen back to the club.

Eriksen would therefore face a rather emotional dilemma; head back to Ajax given his connection to the club or head for the United States instead.

That will be a tough choice but Eriksen – branded a ‘fool’ by Roy Keane last week – surely won’t be playing his football at Old Trafford next term.
