The most likely Sporting star to join United appears to be Geovany Quenda though with the wonderkid on Amorim’s wish list.
Amorim would allegedly love to sign Quenda having handed the wide man his senior debut at Sporting.
Quenda has been branded ‘extraordinary’ in Portugal and he has now broken one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Sporting records.
Quenda started on the left flank for Sporting as they beat Lisbon rivals Benfica 1-0 on Sunday.
The 17-year-old has now become the youngest Sporting player to ever start the Lisbon derby, eclipsing Ronaldo’s 22-year record by two months, as noted by Playmaker (in Portuguese) below.
‘Geovany Quenda surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo and becomes the youngest Sporting player to play in derby against Benfica in the league,’ they wrote.
Ronaldo set the record back in 2002, beating Paulo Futre’s record from 1984 by just 16 days.
Quenda has now taken the record and after both Ronaldo and Futre enjoyed success outside of Portugal, the teenager will be looking for the same.
Ineos can give Ruben Amorim the ideal boost
Amorim will have been busy preparing to face Newcastle United but may have had one eye on how his former club Sporting fared against Benfica.
Sporting sacked Amorim’s replacement Joao Pereira just days ago and went into their biggest game of the season with new boss Rui Borges in the dugout.
Amorim will have paid attention to how Quenda fared in such a big game and will no doubt be hoping for a reunion in 2025.
Ineos may not be able to spend much in January but teeing up an agreement to sign Quenda in the summer could be perfect for Amorim.
There will be other clubs paying attention to the wonderkid but United can attempt to strike early with a deal which sees Quenda stay at Sporting for the second half of the season before arriving at Old Trafford.
Emulating Ronaldo is an almost impossible task but Quenda is clearly making a huge impression in Lisbon and looks set for a huge future – hopefully a future which comes with United.
