Manchester United are set to sign a left wing back for the future but still have a real interest in signing one of Ruben Amorim’s former players.
The January transfer window is just around the corner but we aren’t expecting major business from Manchester United.
United spent around £180million over the summer, backing Erik ten Hag with a number of first-team signings.
That may mean that Ruben Amorim has to wait until the summer transfer window to make significant purchases.
United are close to landing a signing though with Cerro Porteno’s Diego Leon set to sign.
Leon is close to joining United but will only be able to arrive at the end of the season, once he has turned 18.

Manchester United given hope of PSG deal
Leon could be United’s left wing back of the future but few would blame Amorim for wanting a more immediate impact signing in that role.
Diogo Dalot hasn’t exactly looked natural in that new role and Luke Shaw’s latest injury setback means United need more options.
Reports in November suggested that United were interested in signing Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain.
Mendes played under Amorim at Sporting but a reunion looked to be a long shot.
Fabrizio Romano added that Mendes was close to signing a new deal with PSG, seemingly ruling out a move to United in the process.
However, Florian Plettenberg now claims that those plans have stalled with Mendes ‘currently not planned’ to sign new terms.
A number of clubs are thought to be interested in Mendes, who appears to be keeping his options open.
United are ‘strongly interested’ in signing Mendes, who is out of contract in the summer of 2026 after joining PSG for £34million, as noted by BBC Sport.
Now approaching the final 18 months of his deal, Mendes has given United a glimmer of hope by holding off on a new PSG contract – and he may be a name to keep tabs on in 2025.
Nuno Mendes would be a huge signing for Manchester United
If United are seeking a left wing back who can not only make an impact right now but also offer great longevity, Mendes fits the bill.
The PSG star is only 22 but is already a proven player at the highest level, shining in the Champions League and for Portugal.
Kylian Mbappe was quoted by Record as saying that Mendes is a simply ‘extraordinary’ and ‘magnificent’ player having been impressed with him at PSG.
Mendes is also a huge fan of Amorim having backed him for success after trading Sporting for United.
That connection to Amorim could give United a genuine chance of luring Mendes away from PSG – and securing a major coup in the process.
