Manchester United will finally begin the Ruben Amorim era on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Ipswich Town.

Manchester United fans have been forced to wait a while for this moment.

Ruben Amorim was appointed as United boss way back on November 1, but was allowed to stay with Sporting until the international break.

Amorim has now been in Manchester for nearly two weeks and finally, approaching a month since his appointing, he is ready to go.

The 39-year-old will hope for a positive start at Ipswich Town this afternoon as he starts to truly learn about his United squad.

Amorim certainly won’t know his best team just yet, but that isn’t stopping the rumour mill from churning out potential signings in 2025.

Manchester United want Paris Saint-Germain star

Amorim plays a 3-4-3 formation and that means United will play wing backs moving forward.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have struggled with injuries in recent times and United need to be in the market for another left wing back.

United have been linked with Alphonso Davies whilst Alvaro Fernandez has caught Amorim’s eye at Benfica.

Another name can be added to the list though as the Daily Mail report that United are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes.

It’s suggested that United are ‘keeping an eye’ on Mendes in the hope of reuniting him with Amorim at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old played under Amorim at Sporting before joining PSG, initially on loan, in 2021 before turning the move permanent for £31.5million.

Mendes has now hit 13 goals and four assists in 93 games for PSG and is considered to be one of the top young left backs in the world.

Nuno Mendes on Ruben Amorim

Amorim handed Mendes his Sporting debut in 2020, allowing him to progress rapidly before joining PSG just a year after his appearance.

Mendes only spent 12 months playing under Amorim but absolutely loved his time with the new United boss.

Speaking earlier in November, Mendes reacted to Amorim’s United move by predicting big things.

“I think I just have to congratulate him,” said Mendes. “I think he is a coach who has done everything for football and is having great success in football. But I think he has the potential to do much more than what he has already done.

“I just want to wish him the best of luck, both to him and to the [Portuguese] players and coaches abroad. I think it is very important [that Amorim succeeds at Man United] and that is all I have to say,” he added.

Mendes may be somewhat attracted to playing under Amorim again and he would certainly help solve United’s issues on the left.

Whether PSG would sell Mendes is another matter though, even as he approaches the final 18 months of his contract.

PSG will be battling to keep Mendes and extend his contract, with United’s chances of a deal surely slim heading into January.
