Manchester United’s squad overhaul will continue this summer with plenty of departures expected.
Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham exposed just how weak this current Manchester United squad is.
Unsurprisingly, Ruben Amorim was frustrated at his players during the loss. The Portuguese coach has been thrown head-first into a nightmarish situation.
Amorim’s squad only became weaker throughout the January window, with Patrick Dorgu arriving for £25m as the only signing with senior experience. In the other direction, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia all left on loan.
Profit and Sustainability Rules will continue to limit United’s spending into the summer unless sales are made. It seems as though Ineos are preparing to wave goodbye to several players when summer rolls around.
Christian Eriksen contract decision made by Ineos
Christian Eriksen is one of four United players out of contract this summer. As things stand, the 33-year-old midfielder will become a free agent on June 30th.
Back in October, Eriksen issued an update on his contract, explaining that no talks had taken place about a potential new deal.
Since then, not much has changed and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Eriksen will now start exploring his options with no new contract on the table.
Eriksen has been informed that he will leave the club at the end of the season after spending three years at Old Trafford.
The Denmark international has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring four goals and assisting four times.
That tally would have likely increased on Sunday afternoon if Eriksen wasn’t ruled out of the Tottenham clash with an illness.
Man United must strengthen in midfield this summer
With Eriksen set to leave the club, United could find their midfield department lacking depth in the summer.
Especially as Casemiro will likely leave United this summer too. Casemiro’s contract is valid until 2026, but the Red Devils will be eager to cash in on him amid Saudi Arabian links.
Casemiro came close to leaving in January but ended up staying put. He has slipped down the pecking order under Amorim and only featured against Spurs because Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer all suffered injury setbacks.
United are interested in Chris Rigg, with the Sunderland youngster wowing club scouts. Sverre Nypan is also on United’s radar and interest could be reignited in the summer.
But United also have other positions they will want to prioritise, including a new striker.
