Why Ruben Amorim was ‘raging at his bench’ during Man United’s defeat to Tottenham

Ruben Amorim has now suffered eight defeats in his first 14 Premier League matches as Manchester United boss.

The woeful record in the Premier League extended on Sunday afternoon after Manchester United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in North London.

James Maddison scored the only goal in the first half and United’s struggles in front of goal continued with Alejandro Garnacho missing a golden opportunity early on.

United improved in the second half but the damage was done early on when the Red Devils once again looked unorganised.

The midfield was left exposed when Bruno Fernandes had to sprint out wide to cover defensively. Ruben Amorim certainly wasn’t pleased with his side’s performance, and one moment sent him into a rage.

Ruben Amorim spotted ‘raging’ at Man United bench

Amorim included seven academy stars on the bench against Tottenham, with Chido Obi making his senior debut as an injury-time substitute.

But it wasn’t the substitutes that Amorim was furious at in the first half.

Sky Sports’ Peter Smith reported: “Amorim is raging at his bench, complaining about his players straying offside from a free-kick.

“But he’s not been happy for much of the match. United have had plenty of chances in this half but there’s still so much vulnerability to this team.”

Matthijs de Ligt was ruled offside during a dangerous free-kick in the first half, and Amorim’s angry reaction was also spotted by Gary Neville on Sky Sports commentary. He said: “Amorim is really angry. He is going mad at his bench. He is shouting at people.

“The biggest problem l can see is how this team are set up.”

Ruben Amorim frustrations continue

Despite an underwhelming start at United, Amorim has stubbornly stuck to his plan and his style of play.

Reports have claimed that United players have questioned Amorim’s tactics, and the first half against Spurs won’t be giving anyone any confidence.

However, Amorim was visibly annoyed at how players are executing his strategy, or more accurately, not executing it.

Amorim had plenty of training before facing Spurs, but there was still very little progress made in terms of performance.

Amorim wasn’t helped by an injury crisis throughout the week, but he will be extremely disappointed that his senior players continue to look unorganised and chaotic during matches.
