Patrick Dorgu settles the debate on his preferred position after ‘concern’ over Ruben Amorim decision

Patrick Dorgu was signed by Manchester United over the January transfer window to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s wing-back options.

After his very first game in charge of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim wanted a new left wing-back signed.

Due to injury problems, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia weren’t available, meaning Diogo Dalot has spent most of the season playing out of position on the left.

However, United signed Patrick Dorgu for £25m last month from Lecce in a move that many hoped would end the wing-back dilemma.

However, Dorgu made his United debut against Leicester City at right wing-back, with Dalot starting on the left once again. Paul Scholes had a “concern” with Dorgu’s position, suggesting Ruben Amorim’s decision was baffling.

Patrick Dorgu names his preferred position at Man United

After beating Leicester, Amorim defended his decision to play Dorgu on the right, explaining that the 20-year-old often played there for Lecce.

Frankly, Dorgu’s versatility is his biggest strength. Not only has he played on both flanks, but he has also played as a centre-back as well as in more advanced positions.

In an interview with beIN Sports, Patrick Dorgu was asked if he preferred to play on the left or on the right. Amorim will love his response.

“I don’t really mind, I can play both sides,” Dorgu said with a smile.

“I have played a lot on the right for my old team and I played on the left also.

“So I’m comfortable in both positions.”

With Dorgu now at Old Trafford, Amorim has plenty of options to pick from at wing-back, and he can adapt his lineup dependent on opposition.

Patrick Dorgu may have to feature as a No.10

As if Amorim’s job wasn’t already hard enough, he is now facing an injury crisis at United.

Amad Diallo confirmed he is out for the season after suffering an ankle injury during training. He is joined on the sidelines by Kobbie Mainoo, who is out for weeks. Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer have also suffered setbacks.

United’s attacking options have already been spread thin with Marcus Rashford and Antony leaving on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively.

In Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 shape, the Portuguese head coach needs two attacking options either side of a central striker – that is where Dorgu may end up during the business end of the season.

Dorgu has played as a winger for Lecce, and he showed his pace and direct approach during his debut.
