How Bruno Fernandes might end up deciding Casemiro’s future at Manchester United

The summer 2026 transfer window might be eight months away, but already, Manchester United’s plans are taking shape, with midfield set to dominate.

Ruben Amorim got everything he could have asked for in the summer 2025 transfer window, apart from that crucial new midfielder.

However, already, Manchester United look set to spend big on improving the midfield next summer, with an overhaul being widely expected to take place.

United have been linked with some of Europe’s most exciting midfielders, with Adam Wharton, Angelo Stiller, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Carlos Baleba, and Elliot Anderson all emerging as targets.

This is because United’s four current midfielders have uncertain futures. However, a wide-scale clear-out is unlikely.

Manchester United not planning a complete midfield overhaul in 2026

Casemiro has been tipped to leave United next summer, with his contract expiring and the likelihood of an extension being slim. However, he is not alone as Bruno Fernandes is also expected to leave.

Now, speaking with The United Stand, Ben Jacobs has claimed that it is unlikely both depart, with their futures likely dependent on each other.

“My gut feeling, speaking to sources as well, is that you won’t get that mass exodus, so if they think Bruno’s going to go, you’re more inclined to extend Casemiro.

“If Casemiro departs, you’re more inclined to fight to keep Bruno.”

Additionally, Jacobs admitted that the same applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte.

“If Kobbie Mainoo goes, Manuel Ugarte stays. They’re not just going to open the door and let four walk.”

Manchester United cannot lose both Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the same summer

While both are starting to get into the latter years of their careers, both Casemiro and Fernandes remain pivotal to United and Amorim.

On the pitch, they have played big roles in the impressive form that the Red Devils have found this season, while off it, they are massive.

Fernandes is the United captain, while Casemiro is the team’s most experienced player, driving standards within the club.

So losing both of these figures would be potentially disastrous for the dressing room, as they are probably the two biggest leaders at the club right now.

United should attempt to extend Casemiro’s deal on greatly reduced terms and sell Fernandes to fund a summer with Bouaddi and Baleba, or any combination of the linked players.

One thing is certain that both cannot go in the same summer, or it could backfire.
