Among Ineos’ top targets for 2025 is Sunderland’s Chris Rigg and as the January transfer window draws close, interest is heating up.
Ineos are looking for the superstars of tomorrow as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desired transfer philosophy at Manchester United.
This plan has already seen Leny Yoro and Chido Obi-Martin join the club and now January could see a move made for the Championship’s most exciting player.

Sunderland are top of the Championship and among their best players has been 17-year-old Chris Rigg. The central midfielder has long been a target for the Red Devils but since the summer, interest has really ramped up.
A 2025 swoop for Rigg has long been considered on the cards for United, but now the player’s stance on the potential move has been revealed.

Ineos planning Chris Rigg bid
It was revealed in September that United were pushing hard to sign Rigg – who was compared with legend Bryan Robson at the time.
Since then, Rigg has put in some mesmerising performances which proves exactly why United are so interested.
Now it is being reported that United are likely to bid in January, although Sunderland are not keen on selling mid-promotion push.
Rigg stance on Manchester United move
With the January transfer window just over a month away, we are now seeing the Rigg interest develop every day – with the latest update coming through a report by Give Me Sport.
It is claimed that United are now getting serious about making a move for Rigg in January, with £30m expected to be the fee needed to convince the Black Cats to sell.
Continuing, the report also explains the stance of Rigg over the deal, asserting that the wonderkid would be far more receptive to the move in the summer than in January – which is in line with Sunderland’s stance.
This does not rule out a January move, and it will likely be down to financials – but if United do want Rigg then paying Sunderland’s demands may be pivotal, even if loaning the player back until June.
Interestingly United rejected the chance to sign Rigg for £3m back in the summer of 2023 – with John Murtough and Co deeming this figure excessive. This looks like a huge error right now as a January move could cost 10 times that figure.
