Manchester United are being linked with a move for Samuel Umtiti as our pursuit of Harry Maguire continues to frustrate.
The source is French outlet Le10Sport, which is far more ‘miss’ than ‘hit’.
It claims United are willing to offer £45.5 million, which is below Barcelona’s current asking price of £54 million.
Umtiti featured on our list of 10 potential Maguire alternatives.
Here is a look at three reasons why he would be a terrific addition for United.

Experience
Ask yourself whether you want a World Cup winner in central defence or Chris Smalling or Phil Jones? The answer should already be simple.
In addition to being part of France’s XI last summer, Umtiti has two La Liga titles to his name and two Spanish cups.
Already at the age of 25 he has amassed 288 club appearances, major trophies, and has won World football’s top international honour.
United could really benefit from his experience and potential.

Quality
Umtiti has a physical game which could thrive in the Premier League.
He effectively shut down Romelu Lukaku in the World Cup semi-final, showing he can easily cope with a traditionally physical centre-forward which are common in the Premier League.
Umtiti would be a superb role model for Axel Tuanzebe to learn from and does not have the injury history of Eric Bailly.
He would be a surefire upgrade and like Maguire he is a leader who can help the rest of the back four gel.

Spine
Umtiti could help forge a French spine through United’s starting XI.
With Paul Pogba in midfield and Anthony Martial starting up front, this could be huge for the dynamic of the team.
If Umtiti helps both Pogba and Martial feel more settled and play their best football, the proposed fee could be a bargain.
