10 Maguire alternatives for Manchester United to consider

With Manchester United are no closer to signing Harry Maguire, it might be time to reconsider other options.

The Evening Standard report United aren’t giving up. The Telegraph say the board have decided that Leicester’s £90 million valuation is too much, and alternatives may be considered.

Here is a look at 10 potential alternatives at centre-back.

Ruben Dias

Benfica centre-back Dias is available for a £55 million release clause in his contract.

His performances in the UEFA Nations League finals outshone Matthijs De Ligt as he helped Portugal to victory.

Dias, 22, shot to prominence after replacing Victor Lindelöf at Benfica in 2017.

Nikola Milenkovic

Fiorentina defender Milenkovic is rated as among the best young defenders in Serie A.

The Serbian international has inevitably been compared to countryman Nemanja Vidic.

At just 21, he is only going to get even better and is an exciting prospect.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Koulibaly would be the most expensive, possibly costing even more than Maguire.

The Senegal defender might just be worth it. But at 28, he is one of the older defenders on this list.

Napoli have already signed a potential replacement, landing Kostas Manolas from Roma.

Nathan Ake

Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake is one of the Premier League’s most underrated centre-backs.

He is athletic, good in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet.

At 24, he would not come cheap, but he could be as good as Maguire or even better.

Dayot Upamecano

RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is considered one of the world’s best youngsters.

Upamecano, 20, has racked up 49 appearances for the Bundlesliga side in just two seasons.

He would certainly fit United’s philosophy to get younger and better at the position.

Ibrahima Konate

Upamecano’s Leipzig teammate Ibrahima Konate is just as exciting a prospect.

Also 20, he led the team in blocks, interceptions and duels won.

Konate has the potential to be world class and this sort of deal would be smarter than overpaying for Maguire.

Toby Alderweireld

United might already have blown their chances with this one.

Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause expires tomorrow and United have not shown interest in paying it.

We wouldn’t rule out Ed Woodward still offering a higher amount before the deadline, he’s done this before with Fellaini. Alderweireld would still be an upgrade on our current options, and weaken a rival.

Issa Diop

West Ham defender Diop impressed against United last season and is one of the Premier League’s most promising talents.

The Hammers will not let him go cheaply and United are in a weak position with time ticking down.

At 22, he could be a better longer term investment than Maguire.

Milan Skriniar

Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar is key to their plans and recently signed a new deal.

But how badly do they want Romelu Lukaku? Antonio Conte is very keen.

If United can engineer a swap deal then this would leave us as big winners.

Samuel Umtiti

Barcelona defender Umtiti is a wildcard option for United to consider.

The La Liga champions may need to balance the books in order to complete their own transfer business and bring Neymar back.

He’s still only 25 and after only being picked to start 13 league games last season, United could probably get the World Cup winner at the right price.
