Ruben Amorim has shown signs of progress as Manchester United head coach since his first match against Ipswich Town.
Despite going down to 10 men after Patrick Dorgu’s red card, Manchester United battled hard and picked up a vital three points against Ipswich Town.
Ruben Amorim wanted a quick start, but he got the exact opposite when Andre Onana came racing out of his goal and misjudged Dorgu’s back pass, allowing Jaden Philogene to score the opener after just four minutes.
Rasmus Hojlund struggled against Ipswich, but thankfully United’s centre-back duo Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt etched their name onto the scoresheet alongside an own-goal from Sam Morsy.
United have struggled to score in the first half, but two goals before the break will please Amorim. As will the improvement in set pieces.

Man United score three set-piece goals vs Ipswich Town
During Amorim’s first few weeks at United, his side seriously struggled when it came to defending set pieces.
Amorim urged United to improve from set-pieces after conceding two against Arsenal back in December. The problems persisted, with Onana and Altay Bayindir conceding directly from corner kicks.
However, Amorim has finally had time to train, and it seems to have produced better results from set pieces – both defending and attacking.
Against Ipswich, all three of United’s goals came from set-piece situations with Bruno Fernandes delivering some wonderful crosses into the box.
It means that United’s past six goals, dating back to Maguire’s goal against Leicester City have all come from Fernandes set pieces.
United have now scored 10 goals from set pieces this season, more than they managed throughout the whole of the 2023/24 campaign.
Ruben Amorim’s time at Carrington is paying off
Amorim found it difficult to implement his ideas during his first few weeks due to United’s hectic schedule.
But with more time at Carrington, United are finally starting to show signs of progress. Against Ipswich, the Red Devils played some of their best football before Dorgu’s unfortunate sending off.
Amorim has asked for patience as he tries to get things right at United, and picking up wins like this will earn him more time to impress.
Issues off the pitch such as the 200 jobs cut by Ineos are only making Amorim’s job harder, but his transparency and honesty has been refreshing for United fans.
The challenge now is to show consistency and build in confidence from the Ipswich win. Up next is a visit from Fulham in the FA Cup before the first leg of the Europa League tie against Real Sociedad.
