Flawless Man United star forces Ruben Amorim into Alejandro Garnacho axe for Lyon second leg

Ruben Amorim will be disappointed after watching Manchester United throw away their lead against Lyon in the Europa League.

After a war of words with Nemanja Matic throughout the week, Andre Onana had a nightmare performance as Manchester United drew 2-2 with Lyon on Thursday evening.

The Cameroon shot-stopper made errors for both of Lyon’s goals, misjudging a bounce for the opener before spilling the ball to United target Rayan Cherki in the final few seconds.

Without those mistakes, United would be taking a well-earned advantage back to Old Trafford. Once again there were signs of promise in United’s display, especially from those who came off the bench.

Ruben Amorim might have to drop Alejandro Garnacho

Amorim has defended Garnacho during his poor run of form, but the Argentine’s poor decision-making proved costly against Lyon.

Garnacho doesn’t seem to fit Amorim’s system, with the Portuguese coach wanting his two No.10s to play narrow and link up play rather than stick to the touchline.

United are struggling to score and Garnacho is not helping as he continues to squander big chances with poor decisions. The Red Devils looked best when Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount came off the bench.

Mount impressed against Man City, and the midfielder got some more valuable minutes in the tank against Lyon in the second half.

Since day one as United’s head coach, Amorim fell in love with Mount and the English midfielder seems a much more natural fit to his 3-4-2-1 system.

Mason Mount was near flawless for Man United vs Lyon

United fans were impressed by Mount when he came off the bench in the Manchester derby last weekend, but it didn’t quite earn him a starting spot against Lyon.

Mount replaced Manuel Ugarte in the 72nd minute and immediately improved United in and out of possession. It feels like a matter of time until he earns himself a starting spot.

And it could come at the expense of Garnacho, especially as Mount was near-flawless against Lyon.

In his 18-minute cameo, Mount completed 100% of his passes (5/5) and two defensive actions.

He did pick up a yellow card after a heated moment with Nicolas Tagliafico, but it came as a result of Mount adding more intensity to United’s play.

United will be tasked with breaking down Lyon at Old Trafford and Mount proved in France that he is more than capable of stepping up and replacing Garnacho.
