Ruben Amorim has suggested that one Manchester United star has to “choose better in the last third” ahead of the Premier League match against Manchester City.
The Red Devils will resume their Premier League campaign on Sunday at Old Trafford, with kick-off for the Manchester City match slated for 4:30pm UK time.
Ruben Amorim’s men head into the Manchester derby on the back of Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Tuesday evening.
United produced a solid showing against Nottingham Forest, despite missing out on all three Premier League points in their first match since the end of the March break.
However, the Red Devils were left chasing the match after going behind in the fifth minute thanks to a wonderful solo effort from former United man Anthony Elanga.
United only have eight matches remaining in their 2024-25 Premier League campaign and the Red Devils have only picked up 10 wins in the league this season.
Amorim’s side have won only two of their last five matches in the Premier League ahead of hosting Pep Guardiola’s City side for the Manchester derby.

Ruben Amorim’s feelings on Man Utd star Alejandro Garnacho couldn’t be clearer ahead of Man City match at Old Trafford
Alejandro Garnacho was one of the two No 10s in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for Manchester United in the 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at City Ground.
The 20-year-old Spain-born attacker saw out the full 90 minutes of the Premier League match, but Alejandro Garnacho deeply unimpressed United fans.
Garnacho was met with heavy criticism over his lacklustre display for United, including his erratic shooting and struggling to adapt to Amorim’s system.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, United manager Amorim explained that the Argentina international is “improving” overall as a player.
But the 40-year-old former Sporting CP boss has warned Garnacho that he expects him to improve in other ways, including both his defensive and attacking qualities.
“I think he is doing the right things,” Amorim said, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“Like any player in our team, he has to choose better in the last third. Bruno [Fernandes] is the only one scoring goals easily.
“Garnacho needs to improve the way he runs, the way he defends, scores and assists. He is improving.”
Ruben Amorim sends a clear message about the remainder of Man Utd Premier League campaign ahead of the Manchester derby vs Man City
Despite missing out on the Premier League top four, Amorim insisted that United are not downplaying their need to climb the table before the current season is done.
“We want to win this game, we want to improve in the league table and especially we want to win games,” he said.
“We are going to have full focus on this game.”
United are 15 points adrift from fourth-place Chelsea and the Red Devils are on course for their worst finish in the table in the Premier League era.
