Will Paul Pogba stick to his word about PSG move ‘not appealing’?

It appears Paul Pogba’s previous dislike for Paris Saint-Germain may be about to be tested.

The Manchester United midfielder’s future is unclear, and of his possible exit routes from Old Trafford, PSG looks like the most likely path.

RMC Sport reported this week that PSG are holding discussions with ‘Pogba’s entourage’ and add that the midfielder ‘seems more and more open to the idea of joining Paris’.

PSG could offer Pogba a substantial salary and a great shot at winning a league title, while also linking up with international teammate Kylian Mbappe ahead of the World Cup. There are multiple attractions for him and on one level it makes sense.

But to put pen to paper with PSG, Pogba would have to go back on his word.

Pogba’s 2018 vow

Pogba once dismissed the idea of a move to PSG, citing family preference.

The United midfielder was quote by Marca: “I’m sure that I wouldn’t play club football at the Parc des Princes.

“I’m not attracted to that because my father and mother were fans of Marseille so Paris doesn’t really fit into my plans.”

A lot can change of course, including Pogba’s own personal growth and being willing to put his career goals ahead of an old family preference.

PSG offering a mega salary could do a lot to change his mind, and with Mino Raiola twisting his arm, don’t rule anything out.

United signed Pogba from Le Havre in 2009 before he joined Juventus, and then the club paid a record fee to re-sign him in 2016.

United want him to stay

United’s preference is still for Pogba to sign a contract extension, with his current deal set to expire in 2022.

What Pogba wants is less clear. The fear is that his reluctance to sign a new contract up until this point speaks volumes. Agent Mino Raiola will be at the heart of it too.

If he ends up signing with PSG after his previous comments about them, then it will say a lot for his desire to leave Old Trafford, that he was so desperate to leave that he was willing to go back on his own word and upbringing from a Marseille household to do so.
